SAN MARCOS, Texas – After dropping the series opener on Thursday, Troy softball evened the series with a 4-2 with over Texas State. The Trojans (28-21, 7-10 SBC) used a three-run first inning and a strong outing from Alyssa Faircloth (13-6) to beat the Bobcats (30-14, 12-5 SBC).
Dailynn Motes had a breakout game at the plate, recording her first career multi-hit and multi-RBI games. The true freshman went 2-for-3 from the plate, driving in three runs.
From the circle, Faircloth held the Texas State offense in check. She pitched seven innings, striking out four and allowing five hits in the complete game.
The Trojans got things started early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Cassidy Boltz drove an RBI double to left field to score one run, and Motes followed it up with a two-RBI single to give Troy a 3-0 lead.
Faircloth struck out one as part of a one-two-three first inning from the circle, but the Bobcats hit a solo home run to center field in the second inning to cut Troy's lead to 3-1. Texas State scored one more run in the inning on a wild pitch.
After Annie Orman led off the third inning with an infield single, Motes slapped a single to right field to bring her home and widen the lead to 4-2. Faircloth followed it with a quick inning to get back on track.
While the Bobcats put runners on the corners in the fourth inning, Faircloth punched out two batters to keep the score where it was.
Although McKinney hit a double in the fifth inning, Troy couldn't widen the lead. Texas State tried to cut into its deficit in the fifth inning, but Motes made a strong throw home to get a Bobcat runner trying for home plate.
The Trojans caused some traffic on the basepaths in the sixth, but Texas State escaped the inning with a double play.
Faircloth worked out of another jam in the sixth inning, forcing a groundout to send it to the seventh. The Trojans couldn't get any insurance runs in the final inning. However, Faircloth worked around a hit by pitch and two walks to close the door on the Bobcats.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It was a great bounce-back win for us today. It was a gritty performance after a tough loss yesterday, and I'm really happy for the girls. They showed a lot of heart and grit. Alyssa Faircloth pitched good enough to win, and I certainly thought it was very gritty. We had a determined spirit and played well defensively. Offensively, scoring in the first inning turned out to be a really big deal, and I'm really proud of the team and the heart they showed today."
