SAN MARCOS, Texas – Makaley Boswell's go-ahead double in the seventh inning fueled Troy softball's 3-2 win over Texas State. The Trojans (29-21, 8-10 SBC) took the series win over the Bobcats (30-15, 12-6 SBC) with a strong effort in every area of the game – it was the first road series win against Texas State in program history.
After Texas State tied the game up with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, Mia Tidmore led off the seventh inning with a bunt single. Boswell roped a double to right-center field to bring her home and give Troy the lead.
A spectacular diving catch by Annie Orman in right field helped Savannah Money (4-5) close the game out – three Trojan pitchers combined to hold the Bobcats to six hits and two runs in the rubber match.
Boswell fueled Troy from the plate as the Trojans battled Bobcats ace Madison Azua for six innings – Texas State utilized an opener but pulled her after she gave up two runs in the second inning.
The Troy second baseman went 3-for-4, driving in two RBIs. In the win, Boswell recorded her third three-hit game of the season.
After Mya Holt started the game with 2.1 strong innings, Kate Peters entered the game and fired 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits.
Boswell led off the game with a single and Orman poked one through the left side for a base hit, but the Trojans couldn't score in the inning. Holt went out and sat down the Bobcats in order in her first inning of work.
The Trojans struck in the second inning after Kayden Dunn led it off by looping a single to the outfield. Holt drew a walk, and the Trojans scored one on a fielder's choice. Boswell poked another single through the left side to make it a 2-0 game.
After drawing a walk, Texas State scored a run on a single up the middle to cut Troy's lead to one. In the third inning, Peters entered in relief of Holt and got two quick outs to end the frame.
While the Trojans didn't score in the fourth inning, Peters went back out and spun another scoreless inning. Troy went down in order in the fifth, but Peters worked around a single to hold the Bobcats scoreless again.
Money entered the game in the sixth inning looking to protect Troy's one-run lead. However, Texas State was able to tie the game up with an RBI single to left field – the Trojans threw out a Bobcat trying for third base to end the inning.
Boswell's double in the seventh gave Troy the lead right back, as Tidmore scored after reaching on a bunt single. Money closed the game out in the seventh with a strong defense behind her – Orman made a diving grab, and Cassidy Boltz snagged a hard line drive.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"Big time series victory! Our team has had so many close losses in conference play this year and to come on the road at Texas State and clinch the series in a one-run game is clutch. There were lots of key plays, pitches and at-bats in that game from a variety of players, and the best way to say it is that was a true team victory."
