Annie Orman powered the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 night, hitting a home run and a double to drive in four runs. The Troy outfielder was a triple away from the cycle and has homered in seven out of the past 12 games.
Hitting from the second spot in the lineup, Taylor McKinney set the table for Orman with a 2-for-4 game. She hit a home run to right field and scored two runs.
The Trojans started off quickly as McKinney hit a single to right field and advanced to second base. Continuing her torrid stretch, Orman blasted a home run to center field to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead.
Savannah Money held the Bobcats in check, sitting them down in order in the first inning before holding Texas State scoreless in the second inning. A double play and a strikeout in the second got her out of the inning.
McKinney crushed an opposite field solo homer in the third inning to widen the lead to 3-0. The long ball moved her home run total to 13, pushing her into a tie for sixth place for single-season home runs by a Trojan.
In the bottom of the third, Money worked a quick four-pitch inning to retire the side. Texas State cut into Troy's lead in the fourth, hitting an RBI single up the middle to make it a 3-1 game.
The Trojans extended the lead in the fifth inning, starting with an infield single from McKinnon Howard. After Makaley Boswell took a hit by pitch, Orman roped a double down the third base line to bring in two more runs.
However, the Bobcats got the runs right back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer to center field. Money worked out of the inning with two straight flyouts.
Texas State started the sixth inning with a leadoff double, and Mya Holt entered the game. The Bobcats hit an RBI single to score one and followed it up with a go-ahead grand slam, taking an 8-5 lead.
Texas State scored three more runs on a three-run homer, and the Trojans couldn't do enough in the seventh inning to extend the game. Boswell launched a solo home run – her seventh of the season – but Troy couldn't get anything else going.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"Tonight was a tough loss, and my heart hurts for the team. I thought we played pretty well, especially in the first five innings. We had the lead and were playing pretty good softball – Savannah Money had a good outing and gave us a chance. Our offense hit the ball well and scored six runs off one of the best pitchers in the league. We did a lot of things right but we weren't able to finish and that's disappointing."
