WEST POINT, Miss. – Troy went to the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship looking to prove it belonged, and the Trojans did just that, finishing in third place, tied with No. 32 Mississippi State and just one shot back of No. 15 Alabama in their final tune-up before the Sun Belt Championship next week.
The Trojans, who entered the week ranked No. 53 in the country, shot 6-under in each of the first two rounds and tuned in a 7-over on Tuesday (third-best round of the day). The final round saw difficult pin positions and windy conditions, as scores on the course rose from an average of 73.17 in the second round to 76.85 for the final round.
Brantley Scott continued his torrid spring, finishing in a tie for 10th place at 2-under for the week after shooting 2-over on Tuesday. Scott, who missed last week with illness, will enter the Sun Belt Championship under-par for the year.
No. 3 Ole Miss dominated from the start and ran away with the team title, finishing 33 shots ahead of Alabama. Troy rallied to catch Mississippi State on the final day, as the Bulldogs shot 10-over in the final round compared to Troy's 7-over. Troy played steady golf throughout the week, leading the field with 189 pars and finishing with the second fewest bogeys or worse (39).
Pablo Gracia was responsible for one of just seven rounds in the red on Tuesday, as the Troy sophomore birdied two of his first four holes and followed with 12 straight pars before a bogey on the par-3 17th. His 71 bumped him 12 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 15th place at even for the week.
Lee Poppell battled the wind all day and shot 78 to finish in a tie for 19th after entering the day 4-under thanks to a pair of 70s on Monday, while Jake Springer slipped into a tie for 29th after shooting 82 and Nick Fowlkes climbed 19 spots into a tie for 33rd after a 72.
Troy will open play in the Sun Belt Championship next week as the top-seeded team in the event. Play opens Monday, with the top four teams following 54 holes advancing to match play on Thursday.
