Troy Tied for Fourth as Weather Affects Day One of SBC Men’s Golf Championship

MADISON, Miss. – No. 48 Troy played a steady round of golf to open the Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship on Monday at the Annandale Golf Course as the Trojans are tied for fourth following the opening 18 holes. Only six of the 14 teams finished their round on Monday as inclement weather hit the area in the afternoon.
Troy leads the field with 67 pars but fell behind in the birdies' column, carding just 12 among its five golfers, while Arkansas State and Louisiana dropped in 20 and 19, respectively. The Red Wolves are the clubhouse leader at 10-under par, followed by James Madison (-4) and Coastal Carolina (-3), while Troy and Louisiana are tied at 2-under.
The Trojans failed to take advantage of the three easiest holes on the course to close out their round. The 16th, 17th and 18th combined to allow 69 birdies on the day, almost five per team, but Troy only tallied two on the three holes, both on the par-5 18th.
Brantley Scott played a clean round with three birdies, two coming on par 5s, and 15 pars, to finish the 3-under and tied for fourth place on the individual leaderboard. He was even through his first 10 holes of the day before closing with birdies on three of his final eight offerings. Scott has shot under-par in eight of his 16 rounds this spring and in the 60s in six of those rounds.
Jake Springer turned in Troy's other round in the red of the day, shooting 35 on the back nine, with three birdies on the day for his team-leading 13th round under-par this season. He is tied for 11th place at 1-under, while Pablo Gracia is a shot back in a tie for 19th at even after three birdies and three bogeys.
Nick Fowlkes had a pair of birdies on the front and shot 37 on each end to finish the day tied for 34th place at 2-over, while Lee Poppell had a round front nine (+4) before responding with a 1-under back nine; he closed the day tied for 45th place at 3-over.
The top four teams following Wednesday's third round advance to match play on Thursday to decide the Sun Belt Champion and automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
Teams will complete the first round Tuesday beginning at 7:30 a.m. and the second round will follow after.
