PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – Four Trojans shot under-par, led by Thomas Crane's 4-under 68 in the opening round of the Golfweek Fall Challenge at the True Blue Golf Course; the Trojans are tied for second place after the opening 18 holes.
Troy was in the middle of the pack when it made the turn after playing No. 18 – the Trojans opened on No. 10 – but Troy's four-counting bags carded 11 birdies on their back nine, shooting a combined 10-under to push the Trojans back up the leaderboard.
Crane birdied his opening hole of the season and then added three more over a four-hole stretch from the second through the fifth. He is tied for seventh place overall following his 10th career round in the red and fifth in the 60s.
Lee Poppell, Jack Lowery and Pablo Gracia all shot 1-under 71s in their opening rounds of the season. Lowery, playing in his first collegiate event, carded four birdies on the day, all on his back nine.
Poppell added a pair of birdies and Gracia had three birdies in his round. Lawton Emblom added three birdies of his own in his round of 76. The trio of Trojans at 1-under are tied for 18th place, while Emblom is tied for 58th place.
Georgia Southern shot 16-under as a team and holds a 9-shot lead over Troy and Georgia State, while Old Dominion is three shots back of the Trojans and Panthers in fourth.
