HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Troy women's golf team is bringing home a trophy for the second straight season after claiming the team title at the Huntsville.org Intercollegiate. Three Trojans finished in the top 10 individually as players battled 40 miles-per-hour winds throughout Tuesday's final round at the RJT Hampton Cove Golf Course.
The victory is Troy's first since its win last spring at the GSU Invitational, which was the Trojans' first title since 2000 when Troy won three times in the COVID-shortened season.
"I am so excited for this team," head coach Randy Keck said. "They have put in the work and deserve to see the success. Today was one of the toughest days of golf I have ever witnessed. The wind was blowing 20-40 MPH all day. Today, it was more of an endurance test than a golf tournament. To battle through and get the trophy shows the grit of this team. To get a win feels absolutely amazing."
Troy made its move during the second round with a 2-over 290 as a team, thanks to four individual rounds within two strokes of par, led by a 1-under from Victoria Stutts. The Trojans combined for 18 birdies as a team in the second round, paced by five Mathilda Ringblom and four each from Stutts and Laura Fangmeyer.
Scores were dramatically different on Tuesday as Mother Nature was the story of the day; the average score on the course was 82.41 from the field of 63 golfers. Troy shot 31-over as a team, fourth-best in the field and only five shots back of the day's low round. The Trojans' work on Monday provided the cushion needed against the strong winds for a six-shot victory over North Alabama.
Troy finished 43-over for the tournament ahead of North Alabama (+49), Samford (+58), UNC Asheville (+62) and Tennessee Tech (+76). Stutts closed out her week at 7-over, just three shots off the individual title, won by Samford's Gabi Nicastro, the nation's No. 54-ranked played.
Stutts, who led the field with 13 birdies, shot 7-over on the day with four birdies and finished a shot ahead of Fangmeyer, who carded four birdies in her round of 77. Ringblom continued her strong spring, finishing in eighth place; she was Troy's No. 2 bag in the spring opener after playing just one event in the fall.
Katelynn Altese added her third top-25 finish of the season after finishing in a tie for 20th place and Alyssa Mercado tied for 46th place.
