HUMBLE, Texas – Troy senior Jake Springer became the first Troy golfer since 2007 to win multiple tournaments in the same season after claiming individual medalist honors at The All-American, which concluded Tuesday at The Golf Club of Houston. Troy finished second as a team, its third-straight event in the top two.
The event featured the nation's No. 16 ranked team in UNLV, which Troy beat by 23 strokes; the Trojans defeated No. 51 Arkansas by 33 shots last week at the Seminole Intercollegiate.
"This group right now is doing something pretty special," head coach Clay Bounds said. "We have only lost to two teams in our last three tournaments and have had two individual victories. I couldn't be more proud of the way these guys are handling everything that's being thrown at them. We've battled weather, tough golf courses, and tough teams, and our guys have stepped up in the best way."
Springer shot in the red in all three of his rounds and finished 7-under for the week to rally past Houston's Chi Chun Chun, who shot 3-over on Tuesday after entering the final round at 9-under. Springer becomes the first Trojan since Michael McGrady in 2007 to win multiple events in a season; Springer won the Everett Buick GMC Classic in the fall.
Troy's even-par as a team on Tuesday tied TCU for the best round of the day as the Trojans finished nine shots back of host-Houston for second place. TCU was eight shots back of Troy in third, while Southern Miss and Rice rounded out the top five.
Springer bogeyed just four holes in the tournament, tied for the third-fewest behind teammate Lee Poppell and Chen's three. Brantley Scott continued his hot spring with 14 birdies, second-most in the field, as he tied for fourth, shooting 3-under for the week.
"Jake Springer is one of those special players who leads on and off the golf course," Bounds said. "I'm so proud of him for getting his second career victory this week. He made a huge birdie putt on 16 that propelled him into the lead. It was a great moment. He stuck to his game all week, and it paid off.
"Also, big congrats to Brantley for finishing inside the top five," Bounds said. "He's been playing great golf and continued the trend this week. All our guys finished in the top 25; that's pretty special."
Nick Fowlkes closed the week with 12 birdies as he tied for 17th place overall at 1-over, followed by Poppell and Pablo Gracia, who tied for 21st place at 3-over.
The Trojans were the only team at par on the par-3s and were 14-under on the par-5s while finishing second on the week with 51 birdies.
In the individual tournament, Jason Quinlan climbed a spot into 15th place at 11-over, while Laurenz Kubin tied for 23rd at 14-over.
Troy will have a few weeks off before traveling to Estero, Fla., for the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate on April 7-8.
