Poppell Leads Troy on Day One of Old Corkscrew

ESTERO, Fla. – Despite a last-minute scratch to its lineup, the Troy men's golf team fared well during Monday's opening two rounds of the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate, held at the Old Corkscrew Golf Club. Troy is in second place following 36 holes.

Lee Poppell carried the water for the Trojans on Monday, shooting 2-under on the day, while a trio of Trojans are tied for 12^th place at 1-over par. Troy played without Brantley Scott, who entered the week ranked 28^th in the country after he came down with an illness Monday morning.

Florida Atlantic shot 6-under as a team to grab the top spot on the leaderboard following the opening two rounds. The Owls are seven shots ahead of the Trojans, while Florida Gulf Coast is two shots back of Troy in third, with Louisiana and James Madison tied for fourth at 10-over.

Troy led the field with 110 pars and is in the middle of the pack with 29 birdies; the Trojans' 4.12 scoring average on the par 4 holes ranked tops in the field.

Poppell carded six birdies and added an eagle on the par-5 15^th en route to his 2-under day; he shot 1-under on the par 4s, the best in the field, and is tied for third individually. Jake Springer is tied for sixth with eight birdies on his card, while he, Fowlkes and Gracia are tied for 12^th on the leaderboard at 1-over.

Laurenz Kubin took over Scott's place in the Troy lineup and is tied for 53^rd place overall at 14-over par, while Jason Quinlan shot 16-over and is tied for 56^th place, playing as an individual.

Teams wrap up play Tuesday with the final 18 holes.
