TROY, Ala. – Troy softball dropped a 3-1, ten inning pitcher's duel to Coastal Carolina to open Sun Belt Conference play. Alyssa Faircloth squared off with three-time Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week Nicolette Picone in the series opener, with neither team scoring until the ninth inning.
The Chanticleers (23-4, 1-0 SBC) finally struck in the ninth inning, with a double to left-center field scoring the first run of the game. With the Trojans (18-10, 0-1 SBC) down to their last out, Kayden Dunn tied the game up with an RBI single up the middle to score Taylor McKinney.
A pinch-hit, two run homer in the tenth inning gave the Chanticleers a lead they wouldn't relinquish, as the Trojans couldn't keep the game going.
Faircloth (8-3) dealt in the pitcher's duel, pitching nine innings, allowing only two hits and one run. She retired 12 straight batters from the fourth inning to the seventh inning, locking down one of the top offenses in the nation.
McKinney went 1-for-4 on the night, with her ninth inning double keeping the Trojans alive. Hitting from the cleanup spot, Dunn went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Faircloth started off the game with a scoreless first inning, striking out Delaney Keith, the nation's home run leader. She worked around a Chanticleer double.
Although Caiden Oliva drew a first inning walk, the Trojans couldn't take the early lead. Kayden Dunn hit a ball to the warning track in the bottom of the first, but the wind kept the ball in the park.
The Sun Belt Conference strikeout leader struck out two more Coastal Carolina batters in the second inning, keeping the game knotted at 0-0. Reigning Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week Picone sat down the Trojans in order to end the frame.
Both pitchers continued the duel in the third inning, but McKinnon Howard ended the no-hitter with a bouncer up the middle. However, Coastal Carolina caught the speedy outfielder trying to steal to end the inning.
In the fourth, Faircloth continued her dominance, working around a walk. Reaghan Oney ended the inning with a gravity-defying diving catch in right field. Despite another Oliva walk in the bottom of the inning, Troy couldn't get on the board.
Dailynn Motes slapped a single to right-center field in the fifth, but a double play ended the inning.
The sixth inning was more of the same, with Faircloth getting a one-two-three inning. Natalie Turner led off the bottom of the inning with a bunt single, but the Trojans lined into a double play soon after.
Faircloth continued to shut down the Chanticleers in the seventh, spinning her third straight one-two-three inning to bring the Trojans to the dish in the bottom of the inning. While a Coastal Carolina error allowed Troy to get a runner on, the inning ended on a deep flyout from Makaley Boswell.
Following a walk, Faircloth got a baserunner's interference call and a strikeout. She snagged a bouncing ground ball to end the top of the eighth inning. The Trojans went down in order in the bottom of the inning.
Coastal Carolina's ninth inning run was quickly answered by the Trojans in the bottom of the ninth, as Dunn sent the Troy Softball Complex into a frenzy with her RBI single.
Ally Fleck (0-1) entered the game in the top of the tenth inning, surrendering the go-ahead home run. The Trojans were retired in the tenth inning to end the game.
