LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Troy men's basketball suffered its first defeat of the season on Friday night, falling to Loyola Marymount, 74-63.
Troy (3-1) turned the ball over 20 times, leading directly to 19 LMU points. The Trojans shot 40.9 percent from the field and scored a season-low 63 points.
Cobi Campbell was a bright spot for the Trojans, finishing with 15 points and four assists. Victor Valdes added 14 points, while Cooper Campbell led the Trojans with 16.
For LMU (5-0), Jan Vide led all scorers with 24 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Vide shot 10-18 overall and dished out five assists in the win.
Valdes was the hot hand early on for the Trojans, scoring five of the team's first seven points. Baskets became hard to come by for both teams as the half went on, which included a nearly two-and-a-half-minute scoreless stretch. LMU took the lead into the locker room, 27-25.
The second half opened with Troy throwing the first punch, taking a one-point lead courtesy of a Cobi Campbell three on the first possession. That would be the Trojans' last lead of the game, however, as the Lions built a five-point advantage at the 15:00 minute mark.
Despite keeping the deficit within single digits for most of the half, Troy couldn't regain control. A Jerrell Bellamy free throw cut the LMU lead to two with 9:03 remaining, but timely baskets from Vide and Rodney Brown Jr. - who finished with 17 - put the game out of reach. LMU dribbled out the clock to hand Troy its first loss of the season.
Quotable – Head Coach Scott Cross
"LMU was tougher than we were tonight. The way they guarded us, their physicality, it bothered us. We turned the ball over 20 times. I thought taking care of the basketball would be one of our strengths, but we didn't do that today."
