Men’s Tennis Dominates West Alabama in Doubleheader

TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team swept its double header against West Alabama on Tuesday afternoon at the Lunsford Tennis Complex to push its winning streak to four matches.

Troy (5-3) did not drop a point, winning 4-0 in the first match and 7-0 in the second match. Both matches served as an exhibition for West Alabama.

Match 1: Troy 4, West Alabama 0
The Trojans got off to a strong start in doubles play in the morning match, Vicente Arbelaez and Noah Martens kicked things off with a 6-3 win in the No. 1 spot. West Alabama followed with a win in the No. 3 spot, but Henrique de Brito and Yeray Andres Pastor came up with a clutch 7-6 win in the No. 2 spot to give Troy the early 1-0 lead.

In singles, Pastor picked up an impressive 6-2, 6-3 win in the top spot to give Troy a 2-0 lead. Hiiro Sakamoto pushed the Trojans to within one point of the match victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win on court 5. The Trojans clinched the match on a Luciano Alcocer 6-4, 6-3 win on court 6.

With the teams scheduled to play another match at 2 p.m., both sides agreed that the remaining three matches three matches would go unfinished. Troy was leading in two of them.

Match 2: Troy 7, West Alabama 0
Troy handled doubles with ease in the second match, recording a quick 6-1 win the No. 2 spot by Pastor and de Brito before clinching the point on a 6-3 win by Sakamoto and Alcocer in the No. 3 spot.

In singles, Martens kicked off the scoring with a 6-3, 6-0 win on court 2. De Brito followed with a 6-2, 7-5 win on court five to make it 3-0, Trojans. Troy clinched the match victory with a 6-3, 4-3 (ret.) win by Arbelaez on court 6.

The remaining matches were played out with Troy coming out victorious in all three. Thiago Drozdowski recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win on court 3, Sakamoto won 6-2, 6-2 on court 4 and Pastor capped things off with a 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) win on court one.

Troy returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1, for a match with North Alabama. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
