Men’s Tennis Takes Down Samford, 6-1

TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's tennis team is in the win column for the first time this spring season after defeating Samford 6-1 in its home opener at the Lunsford Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon.
Troy (1-2) got off to a slow start in doubles, but turned it on in singles play, winning all six matches to take the team victory in dominant fashion.
The Trojans got an early come-from-behind win in the No. 1 doubles spot, as Noah Martens and Henrique de Brito were down 4-2 but won four straight points to take the set 6-4. Samford responded with a 6-4 in the No. 2 spot and a 7-5 win in the No. 3 spot to take the early 1-0 match lead.
Luciano Alcocer leveled things up at 1-1 with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win in the No. 6 spot. Freshman Henrique de Brito followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the No. 4 spot to give Troy a 2-1 lead, a lead it did not relinquish the rest of the match.
Nicolas Simkin picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win in the top singles spot to move the Trojans within a point of the match victory, which was clinched with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 5 spot by Hiiro Sakamoto, who remains undefeated (2-0) this spring.
With the team victory already clinched for the Trojans, both teams opted to play out the final two matches. Yeray Andres Pastor won 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot, while Martens finished things off with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win in the No. 3 spot.
The Trojans are back in action on Sunday morning against No. 11 Mississippi State.
