MONROE, La. — The Troy track and field program had a strong second day of the Sun Belt Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, as it recorded a first-place and third-place finish in addition to a number of other strong performances at the Groseclose Track at Brown Stadium.
Cole Stewart won the men's javelin with an incredible showing that saw him log his best throw ever and the second best in program history. Stewart hit a mark of 73.75m, more than five meters clear of second place, to take home gold for the Trojans. It's just the third throw in program history over 70m and the second of the season for Stewart, whose previous best of 70.08m came at the Doc Anderson Invitational in the middle of April. The throw was less than two meters short of the program record of 75.60m set by Martins Pildavs in 2012.
Also recording a podium for the Trojans was Biniosa Ezukuse. She finished third in the women's shot put with a personal best throw of 15.92m.
Javon Osbourne finished just shy of a podium spot in the men's shot put, as his mark of 17.75m was good for fourth place. Haruki Sakai finished fifth in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.29m.
Kady Schwietz concluded her competition in the women's heptathlon with a personal best point total of 4,955, good for sixth place. Her best finish out of the seven events was second in the 800m with a time of 2:20.75.
The following Trojans recorded top-eight finishes in the prelims of their respective running events to qualify for the finals on Saturday:
• Jasai Taylor – men's 400m hurdles
• Kasia Cooper – women's 400m
• Tydreke Thomas – men's 100m
Action on Saturday will get underway at 12 p.m. with the remaining six field events happening first. Track events are set to start at 4 p.m. with ESPN+ coverage going live at the same time.
