JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Brooks Bryan hit a grand slam and drove in seven runs to lead Troy past Jacksonville State, 18-10, in a wild game Wednesday night at Rudy Abbott Field. The Gamecocks set an NCAA DI record by using 15 pitchers in the game that saw the Trojans blow a 9-0 lead before rebounding for their sixth straight victory in the series.
Troy (20-11) scored single runs in the first and third innings around a 7-run second to jump out to the large lead. Mikey Bello had the big swing in the second with a 2-run single to open the scoring before Kole Myers added an RBI-double, Will Butcher and Bryan followed with run-producing singles, Kyle Mock was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Aidan Gilroy drove a sac fly to the wall in right.
The unthinkable happened in the fifth as the Gamecocks (9-19) scored 10 runs on just five hits against four Trojan pitchers to take a 10-9 lead.
Playing less than 20 miles from where he played high school ball, Troy freshman Peyton Watts delivered the game-winning hit the following frame with a 2-out, 2-run double to right.
Tremayne Cobb Jr. kept the inning alive with a single after the first two batters of the inning struck out. Mock, who saw his 10-game hitting streak come to an end, walked and Gilroy was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Watts.
Bryan's four hits tied a career-high, while his seven RBIs rank as the most in his young career. Myers, Ethan Kavanagh and Butcher each had a pair of hits, while Butcher drove in three runs. Myers reached base successfully in his first five plate appearances after reaching in all five of his plate appearances in Troy's win at Alabama State on Tuesday.
After Bryan's ninth homer of the season gave Troy a 15-10 lead in the seventh, Butcher doubled home a run in the eighth and Bryan capped his big day with a 2-run single on the very next pitch.
Logan Ross (3-2) picked up the win for Troy, allowing a run on two hits in 1.2 innings of work. Colton Walls made his first career start and worked a scoreless first before Clete Hartzog followed with two scoreless frames.
Caleb Johnson and Derrick Jackson had a pair of hits to lead the Gamecocks, while Josh Sibly (1-1) took the loss for Jacksonville State after allowing two runs in an inning of work.
Of the record 15 pitchers used by Jacksonville State, four did not record an out and eight didn't complete a full inning of work.
Quotable – Troy Head Coach Skylar Meade
"Interesting, yes. I don't know how guys can go from being so competitive and good to being so ugly like we were in the fifth, but we'll fix that; I guarantee you of that. Just a great answer by the guys. Peyton Watts with the big swing. Offense continued to be very relentless and aggressive but also patient."
