MONTGOMERY, Ala. - No. 4 seed Troy had No. 1 seed Southern Miss down to its final out but fell to the Golden Eagles 7-6 at DABOS Park on a walk-off grand slam by Drey Barrett.
The Trojans (30-28) entered the ninth leading 6-2 after a pair of scoreless innings from Dylan Alonso and a scoreless eighth from Noah Thigpen, who struck out the side. After Thigpen opened the ninth with a strikeout, the Golden Eagles (42-14) loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk. Drew Nelson moved to the mound from right field and walked Davis Gillespie to bring the winning run to the plate.
Troy brought in its third pitcher of the inning, Cooper Ellingworth, to face Matthew Russo, who battled a nine-pitch at-bat before the Trojan righty caught him looking. Ellingworth got Barrett into an 0-2 count, but the Golden Eagle third baseman crushed the next pitch over the left field wall to end the ballgame.
Lefty Benjamin Stubbs kept Southern Miss off the board through his first five innings, finishing the ballgame with five strikeouts and three walks. Stubbs Stranded runners on second and in the fifth, beating Gillespie to the bag on a softly hit grounder to first baseman Blake Cavill.
The Golden Eagles knocked Stubbs out before recording an out in the sixth. Russo led off with a double before Barrett hit his first homer of the day. After a base hit by Ben Higdon, the Trojans turned to Dylan Alonso, who got the Trojans out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts while Janicki gunned Higdon down stealing second.Â
Offensively, Troy scored four runs against USM starter Camden Clark, who issued a season-high four walks with four hits while exiting before recording an out in the fifth. Houston Markham went backside for his first homer of the season in the second while the Trojans scored three in the fifth on an RBI single by Janicki and a two-run knock by Nelson. NotablesÂ
Head Coach Skylar Meade
"Had the game in command the whole time, and didn't finish the job. It's very simple. We were put in positions for ultimate success, and just didn't do it when it needed to be done."
