ROME, Ga. – Sixth-seeded Troy fell to third-seeded Georgia State, 4-1, in the Sun Belt Men's Tennis Tournament quarterfinals on Friday at the Rome Tennis Center.
Georgia State (11-12) won the doubles point and picked up victories on courts three, four and five in singles to advance to the semifinals, where it will match up against second-seeded Old Dominion in the semifinals.
The doubles courts were hotly contested as Troy took an early advantage, with Benjamin Ambrosio and Carles Anton winning 6-4 on court three before the Panthers won 7-5 on court two.
Troy's (19-7) pair of Noah Martens and Nicolas Simkin jumped out to a 4-2 advantage only to see the Panthers rally and force a tiebreak at 6-all. Georgia State raced out to a 3-0 advantage before winning the match with a 7-4 victory in the tiebreak.
Anton tied the match with a 6-4, 6-1 victory on court two, the 89th of his career, which ranks as the most in program history. A four-time All-Sun Belt selection – three in singles and one in doubles – Anton finished his Troy career with an 89-38 record in singles.
From there, it was all Georgia State as it won in straight sets on courts five and three before clinching the match on court four.
