TROY, Ala. – Playing its best golf of the year, the Troy women's golf team is set to open play at the Sun Belt Conference Championship on Monday at The Lakewood Club in Point Clear, Ala. The championship features a new format this year as teams will play 52 holes of stroke play with the top four teams advancing to match play.
"I think we're in a good place and playing the best golf we have all year," head coach Randy Keck said. "I'm excited to see the Sun Belt moving to the match play format as it mirrors what you'll see at the national level. We have to put ourselves in a position going into the final round to make a run to win the tournament or finish in the top four, and then match play is a totally different animal."
Keck will take a veteran lineup with him to the Sun Belt Championship, with four of the five golfers in his lineup having competed at the conference event in the past.
Alyssa Mercado enters the event leading the Trojans with six rounds under par, a 2.42 score vs. par, 74.04 overall stroke average and 73.92 stroke average in the spring. She has played seven of her last eight rounds within three strokes over par, has had all but one of her rounds count towards the team card and has been Troy's top finisher in four of the squads 10 events this year.
The other half of Troy's two-headed monster at the top of the lineup is sophomore Laura Fangmeyer, who is responsible for Troy's six other top finishes this year. She carries a 74.75 average and 3.14 score vs. par into the Sun Belt event and is coming off a tie for seventh at the ULM Invitational, where she shot even for the week following a final round 1-under.
"I feel like we have a chance to go down there and win if we play well," Keck said. "We're going to have to be very strategic off the tee. It's a typical Robert Trent Jones golf course with big rolling fairways, greens with different sections, some forced carries and a lot of water; you're going to be challenged off the tee."
Katelynn Altese got a taste of Sun Belt action as a freshman last season playing in two rounds as she enters this year's event coming off a solid spring, where she's more than a stroke better than her fall average and has played five over her last nine rounds within four strokes of par.
Bruna Roqueta will make her third SBC appearance and is just one tournament removed from an eighth-place finish in Troy's victory at the GSU Invitational. Freshman Manya Saini tied for fourth in Troy's win at Georgia State and has shot 3-over or lower in eight of her 13 spring rounds. Jillian Friyia is also on the roster card this week as a substitute if Keck decides to make a swap after one of the first two rounds or before match play.
Troy plays Monday's opening round with Southern Miss and Georgia State from the 10th tee box beginning at 8 a.m.
