Five Straight
After a weekend series sweep over Arkansas State, the Trojans (23-11, 7-5 SBC) ride a five-game winnings streak that extends from midweek victories over Alabama State and Jacksonville State. It also marks the rematch of a two-game rivalry built in the Sun Belt Tournament last season, where the teams split 1-1.
Game one saw Luke Lyon at his best as he pitched a seven-inning complete game with zero earned runs, two hits and nine strikeouts through 102 pitches. He allowed the Troy offense to gel with 14 unanswered runs to give A-State a run-rule shutout behind a 2-for-3 day by Aidan Gilroy on a double and triple. Ethan Kavanagh (3), Will Butcher (2), Peyton Watts (2) and Blake Sutton (2) all managed multi-RBI games in the win.
Game two continued the momentum, with Troy getting a three-run advantage in the second on a homer from Sutton. The Red Wolves fired back to tie the game, 5-5, in the sixth. But a six-run seventh inning on back-to-back singles (Bello, Butcher), a double by Brooks Bryan, an intentional walk for Tremayne Cobb Jr. and a 381-foot home run by Gilroy grabbed the 11-5 lead – Butcher hit a solo homer in the eighth for the 12-5 win.
Sunday climaxed into an instant classic and cemented Peyton Watts' lore into the halls of Riddle-Pace Field. The game looked out of reach on two occasions, with the first finding Troy down 5-3 heading into the eighth before a sac fly from Kyle Mock brought Bryan home, 5-4, and Watts blasted a 354-foot two-run homer over the right field wall, 6-5. The second instance happened half an inning later when A-State hammered a three-run homer to retake the lead, 8-6. However, after a single up the middle by Cobb Jr. trimmed the deficit to one, Watts became the hero again with a walk-off two-RBI single for a 9-8 win.
Freshman Watts led the team in batting average (.455), hits (5), RBIs (7) and total bases (10). He capped off a four-home run weekend for the Trojans alongside Gilroy, who had his first career grand slam, Butcher and Sutton. Gilroy and Sutton joined Watts with 5-plus RBIs as No. 6 tied for the most runs scored over the weekend with three.
Troy has controlled the overall series between itself and App State (19-11, 5-7 SBC), holding a 23-9 advantage, which includes seven of the last 10. The previous three meetings have been offensive explosions on both sides, with neither team scoring less than nine.
The Mountaineers feast on home run opportunities, totaling 53 through 30 games to average 1.77 per game, which ranks second in the league and 28th / 24th in the nation, respectively. They also lead the SBC in HBP with 83, ranking second in the country.
