Mario Martinez Serrano Named SBC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week

TROY, Ala. – Troy sophomore sensation Mario Martinez Serrano has been named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week after defeating his second straight ranked opponent in the Trojans' victory at No. 53 South Florida.
Martinez is 13-0 this spring after he battled to a three-set victory over USF's No. 36 Alvin Tudorica in thrilling fashion. He won the opening set 6-3 before Tudorica battled back with a 6-4 victory in the second.
Martinez had a break to win the third set at 5-4 but came up just short in a deuce situation, before battling back to hold serve and then break Tudorcia and win the third set 7-5. The victory was his second over a ranked opponent in an eight-day span after he defeated No. 64 Ivan Marrero Curbelo from Jacksonville State the previous weekend.
The 2023 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and Player to Watch, Martinez is 33-3 in his Troy career, with 32 of the victories coming on court one. His hot start has led Troy to an 11-2 record to start the season and a No. 62 national ranking.
His success wasn't limited to just singles as Martinez teamed up with Luciano Alcocer for a 6-0 victory in doubles, which proved to be the deciding point against the Bulls after the teams split the singles matches.
Troy hosts Alabama A&M on Saturday at the Lunsford Tennis Complex; first serve is set for noon.
