Women’s Tennis Picks Up Victory in Season Opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Troy women's tennis team opened its spring season on the road against Florida A&M, where it picked up a 4-3 win at the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex on Thursday afternoon.
Troy (1-0) got off to a slow start, as they dropped the doubles points to Florida A&M. The Trojans lost 6-3 on Court 1 and 6-2 on Court 2. Leena Metwally and Valeriia Avdeeva grabbed a 6-4 win on Court 3.
The Trojans struck back in singles, winning four straight matches to pick up the win. Gabrielle Leslie got things started in singles on Court 6, as she defeated Larissa Silva, 6-1, 6-2. On Court 3, Avdeeva followed her doubles win with a 6-4, 3-0 win over Sierra Sandy, who retired in the second set. Metwally got Troy within one point of the match victory as she beat Reagan Harris 6-4, 6-3 on Court 5.
Hagar Ramadan-Amin clinched the team win with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Veronica Rodriguez on Court 4.
Even with the Trojans picking up the team win, the final two singles matches in the first and second spots were played out, with Florida A&M winning both.
Troy welcomes Alabama State to the Lunsford Tennis Complex on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 1 p.m. for its home opener.
