LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Jake Springer fired the fourth-best round in Troy men's golf history en route to winning individual medalist honors at the Everett Buick GMC Classic as play wrapped Tuesday at the Chanel Country Club. The Trojans finished third as a team in a strong field, including wins over a pair of Sun Belt schools.
Springer carded seven birdies and 11 pars during his round of 65, just one shot off the program record. His victory is Troy's first since Brent Hamm won the National Intercollegiate in the spring of 2021, which at the time was the first individual win since the 2012-13 season.
The Troy senior shot 12-under over his three rounds thanks to a 6-under 66 in the second round coupled with his 65 on Tuesday. The 204 is tied for Troy's lowest round since at least 2005-06, as sophomore Lee Poppell carded a 204 last season at the MartinFed Invitational.
"I'm absolutely thrilled for Jake getting his first collegiate win this week at Chenal," Troy head coach Clay Bounds said. "He has put his heart and soul into Troy Golf the past three and a half years, and seeing him bring home a victory is amazing. The team also played very solid overall. We faced adversity after the 36-hole day, and for them to come out after that and hold their own was very special."
Troy shot 5-under as a team over the three rounds, paced by a 9-under 279 in the second round. Little Rock won the team title by 14 shots over South Carolina, which was seven shots better than Troy. Memphis and UAB rounded out the top five in a tie for fourth at 3-under.
Nick Fowlkes just missed a top-10 finish for the second time this year after tying for 11th place at 3-under after shooting 6-under through the first 36 holes of the event, while Lee Poppell tied for 41st place at 7-over par. Grant Yerger tied for 60th place at 11-over in his first collegiate event as a countable bag, while Pablo Gracia shot 2-under in his two countable rounds; his first round score was disqualified after he signed an incorrect scorecard.
The Trojans finished second in the field with 161 pars as a team, while Springer was second individually with 16 birdies and first with a cumulative 5-under on the par 4s.
Troy wraps up the fall in two weeks at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational hosted by South Alabama in Loxley, Ala.
