Troy Soccer Takes on Samford
9/6/2023 11:51:00 AM | Soccer
TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's soccer team closes out its three-game home stand as they face off against in-state foe Samford on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Troy Soccer Complex. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on TroyTrojans.com.
Troy (5-1-0) is off to its best start through six games since the 2015 season when the Trojans also started 5-1-0. Samford (2-1-3) is off to a strong start this season and is currently ranked No. 8 in the United Soccer Coaches Southeast Region Rankings.
Keep the Streak Going
The Trojans look to secure their first six-game win streak since 2014. Through the first six games of 2023, Troy has ridden strong defensive play and a pressure-based offense to jump out to the second-best start in the Sun Belt Conference.
In its five wins, Troy has only allowed one goal and has posted a .933 save percentage. Freshman goalkeeper Rubie Kelley leads the Trojan goalkeepers with four wins this season – including three clean sheets. Une Hebnes Georgsen has one win on the year – a clean sheet against Lipscomb.
The Trojans offense seems to be settling in after having its best statistical performance on Sunday against Alabama State. The Trojans recorded a season-high 27 shots – 14 of which came on goal – and a season-high in goals with four.
With 65 corner kicks this season – 10.83 per game – Troy leads the nation in overall and per-game corner kicks. Stuart Gore-coached teams are known for their high volume of corner kicks, as Northwestern State – where Gore was head coach in 2022 – led the country in per-game corner kicks.
Gabrielle Chartier continues to be a big reason for the strong offensive play from the Trojans as of late. She leads the team in goals (3), points (7), shots (15) and shots on goal (8). Newcomers Delaney Wells and Dolce Villaflor each scored their first two goals as Trojans in this homestand. Wells had both of Troy's goals in its 2-0 win over Alabama A&M last Thursday, and Villaflor scored her first two on Sunday night against Alabama State.
Alabama Showdown
Samford is coming off a strong showing against No. 5 Alabama on Sunday, as they grabbed a point in a 0-0 tie. The Bulldogs' lone loss came in a 2-1 defeat against DePaul. Samford is looking for its first goal in 180 minutes when they take the field on Thursday, as before drawing against Alabama, the Bulldogs tied 0-0 with Ole Miss.
The Trojans are 1-9-0 all-time against Samford. The Bulldog won the last matchup 2-0 in Samford on Aug. 21, 2016.
Headed to the Sunshine State
Following Thursday's game, Troy heads to Jacksonville, Fla., to take on North Florida on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 12 p.m. CT at Hodges Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on TroyTrojans.com.
