TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over Alabama A&M in its home opener on Thursday night to extend its win streak to three.
The Trojans impressive start continues to be the programs best start through five games since 2016, when they also started 4-1.
Troy (4-1-0) was fueled by new-comer Delaney Wells who picked up two goals, which came in the 47th minute and the 78th minute.
The Trojans held the Alabama A&M (0-3-0) offense at bay, allowing only two shots on goal – both saved by Rubie Kelley.
Blank Sheet, Part Three
Kelley picked up her third consecutive clean sheet. Over that span of three games, she has made 11 saves.
The defense has continued to put together a strong effort in front of her, and tonight only allowed four total shots.
Welcome to Troy
In her first home game as a Trojan, Wells found the back of the net twice. The first goal, in the 47th minute was a booming shot just under the crossbar from outside the top of the box. In the 77th minute, Wells headed a beautiful corner off the foot of Riley Rojahn into the right post to double the Trojan lead.
"It started off with the long throw that came back to me. Stu is always a big stickler on letting the ball drop and that was just going through my head. I had the opportunity, and I did what I'm told to do and luckily it went in," Wells said after the game. "I think the first we started a little rocky, but after halftime we just went in and went for grit. That's just what we're here to do."
The first goal came at a much-needed time, as both sides were dormant in the first half, with neither team generating any sustained offense.
First Win at Home
Gore picked up his first home win as the Troy head coach. Here's what he had to say following the game:
"Feels good. Tough game: a difficult team to break down but that was the game plan. We adjusted to a few things at halftime. Wells scored and an absolute banger. What happens is the goal comes in the second half and they have to come out and then we just sit back. We do exercises called second-phase ball."
