Troy Volleyball Battle's No. 21 Washington State In Conclusion of Cardinal Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Troy (0-3) battled No. 21 Washington State (2-1) in the final game of the Cardinal Classic Sunday morning inside the L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.
Amiah Butler led the Trojan offense with 10 kills, followed by Tori Hester and Julia Brooks who each had six. Brooks and Butler shared the net three times giving the Trojans three blocks in the match.
The Trojans saw a combined three aces, with two from Olivia Grantham and one from Sara Bates. Janelle Stuempfig earned 24 assists in the match with Jaci Mesa tallying nine of the squad's 22 digs.
Washington State was led by Iman Isanovic, who tallied 15 kills, followed by Pia Timmer who chalked up nine. Karly Basham clocked 13 digs of the Cougars 34, while Argentina Ung was credited with 37 assists.
Set One
The Trojans took an early lead with an ace from Sara Bates, 3-1. Hester led the offense when slamming one down 5-4. Washington State settled down to get the lead from Trojan errors, 11-7. Amiah Butler slammed one down bringing the Trojans within four, 15-11. The Cougars pulled away from the Trojans with multiple attacks 20-13. Sparks kept the offense going with a kill, 22-15. Washington State took the first set 25-16.
Set Two
Brooks slammed two kills down to get the Troy offense going early in the second, 3-3. The Troy offense continued to put on a show as Butler slammed one down, 8-7. Trading points, Hester was able to keep the score close at 13-12. Butler cut the deficit down to five 19-14. Getting her hand on the ball Hester brought the score to 23-17. The Cougars ended the set with an ace, 25-17.
Set Three
Troy jumped to an early lead with an ace from Olivia Granthem and a dish from Stuempfig 4-2. The Cougars brought the score back within one from an ace bringing the score to 8-7. Butler and Brooks tied the score with a block, 13-13. Butler slammed one down to keep the Trojans within three, 19-16. Washington State went on a 5-0 point run to win the third set at 25-17.
Up Next:
Troy will travel to the Carolina Classic where they will face Miami and South Caroline. Miami posted a record of 19-11 to make an appearance in the NCAA tournament last year.
