Volleyball Heads to Carolina Classic

TROY, Ala. – Trojan volleyball travels to Columbia, S.C. to compete in the Carolina Classic on Saturday and Sunday, where they will face Miami and South Carolina, respectively.
Troy opens the tournament against Miami at 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning, before they wrap up the tournament playing South Carolina at noon Sunday.
The Trojans recently played in the Louisville Cardinal Classic, where Amiah Butler was named to the All-Tournament team. Butler posted 30 kills during the three game lineup.
The Trojans are trying to avoid their second worst start in program history. The last time the Trojans started 0-3 was in 2017 during head coach Josh Lauer's first year.
Serving up:
Miami
Miami this will be the first meetings between the programs. Miami hails from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) where the Trojan's record is 2-10 (.166) including the most recent matchup with Louisville. The Hurricanes are 3-0 heading into the Carolina Classic. Currently the Trojans are 0-2 against first time meetings this season. This will be the third first time opponent that Troy volleyball faces.
The Hurricanes are led by fifth year setter Savannah Vach, outside hitters senior Angela Grieve and junior Peyman Yardimci. Vach tallied 132 assists from the three games that the Hurricanes have competed in. Grieve and Yardimci total 74 of the Hurricanes current 166 kills.
South Carolina
The Trojans and Gamecocks have only matched up three other times in Troy program history, all resulting in a Gamecock win. South Carolina comes from the SEC, where Troy is 4-30(.117) out of all time opponents faced in the SEC. The first meeting between the programs hails from 1998, during Ginger Lowe's second stint as Troy volleyball's head coach. South Carolina won 3-0 against the Trojans in the '98 season. The most recent meeting came in 2017 during current head coach Josh Lauer's first year. The Trojan's went 0-3 when they last met the Gamecocks at the net. Last season, Troy matched up with three SEC teams all resulting in a loss for the season.
The Gamecocks are currently led by freshman setter Sydny Floyd and junior outside hitter Lauren McCutcheon and senior outside hitter Riley Whitesides. Floyd is credited with 42 assists out of the squad's 125 assists. McCutcheon and Whitesides combined make up 57 of the 129 kills.
