MOBILE, Ala. – The Troy women's soccer team matched their win total from the 2022 season after defeating Queens of Charlotte 1-0 for its third win of the season on Sunday morning in the South Alabama Tournament.
Troy (3-1) had another impressive showing, with senior defender Hallie Field scoring the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute off an assist from Gabrielle Chartier. With nine points through four games, the Trojans are off to their best four-game start since 2016 (nine points).
Freshman goalkeeper Rubie Kelley kept the Queens of Charlotte (1-2-1) at bay, by putting together another stout performance in net, picking up her second clean sheet in as many games.
Fighting Through the Heat
Sunday's game, originally scheduled for 12 p.m., was moved up to 10 a.m. due to excessive heat in Mobile. While that added another difficult element to the game, the Trojans came out of the gates strong, tallying eight shots in the first 45 minutes.
The Trojans kept the pressure on all game finishing with 12 shots – five on goal – and had possession of the ball for 51 percent of the game, 47 percent of which came around the Royals net.
Troy had a season-high in corner kicks, 18, to bring the season total to 39.
Dealing with Adversity
Head Coach Stuart Gore was pleased with how his team played today.
"Today was dealing with the adversity. The game time change and extreme heat. First half, I thought we dominated the game and got the goal we deserved. Second half we started brightly and created opportunities with [Carley White] hitting the post. Then we faded and let [Queens of Charlotte] into the game. But credit to our team, they grinded it out."
Coming Home
The Trojans and Gore make their much-anticipated home debut on Thursday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. against Alabama A&M at the Troy Soccer Complex. Admission to all Troy soccer games is free.
