Nashville, Tenn. – The Troy women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season on Thursday night, defeating Lipscomb, the A-Sun preseason favorites in the conference, 1-0 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
The win marks new head coach Stuart Gore's first of his tenure with the Trojans.
After being held scoreless in the first half, Troy (1-0-0) broke through on a Gabrielle Chartier goal off of a corner kick in the 59th minute. Lipscomb (0-1-0) applied pressure late in the game but couldn't find the back of the net.
Weathering the Storm
Lipscomb came out firing early, scoring a goal 20 seconds into the game. However, due to an offsides call, the goal was nullified. The Bison kept the pressure early on, but Troy was able to settle down and find their groove.
Each team had seven shots in the first half, with both generating some good scoring chances. Troy goalie Une Hebnes Georgsen came up with a massive save with just minutes to go before the break that kept it level at zero.
The Trojans took over in the second half and came up with the winning moment.
Welcome to Troy
Gore didn't have to wait long to pick up his first win as the man in charge.
"Tough game. A grind against not only one of the best teams in the A-Sun, but a top team in the country," Gore said following the win. "To come out and grind the way we did, it was fantastic. Especially in the second half, it was a battle. Everybody pitched in tonight. It was fantastic to see."
