Women’s Tennis Wins Third Straight SBC Match

TROY, Ala. – For the third straight Sun Belt Conference match, the Troy women's tennis team finished victorious to rise above .500 in conference play after a 5-2 win over Texas State at the Lunsford Tennis Complex on Sunday morning.
The Trojans (11-5, 4-3 SBC) responded to a two-match losing streak with their longest win streak in conference play (3) since 2017-18 over Georgia State, App State and Coastal Carolina. The struggles for the Bobcats (5-14, 1-8 SBC) continue despite finding their first conference win yesterday at GSU.
Doubles were one point away from a 3-0 sweep before both sides called it after Kristina Kukaras / Hagar Amin and Maria Guirguis / Franziska Ahrend won their matches 6-2, 6-4, respectively, for Troy.
Guirguis started singles with a blowout on court four to take a 2-0 lead, blanking the competition, 6-0, 6-0 for her fourth straight win. However, Kukaras wasn't far behind on court one with a 6-2, 6-4 victory that put the Trojans one point from victory.
Olivia Elliott returned to winning ways after four straight losses in clinching fashion. On court five, the junior dominated Sofia Fortuno in both sets (6-3, 6-3) to win the match for Troy, 4-0.
A blimp in the record came on court six when Franziska Ahrend had her three-match win streak snapped, 6-2, 6-3. However, Amin put Troy back on the board after the Egypt native won set one convincingly, 6-0. Set two saw Emily Niers fire back before Amin pulled away late, 7-5, for Troy's final point.
