TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's golf team opens play at the Sun Belt Championship Monday as the No. 4 seed at the par-72, 7,190-yard Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss.
The Sun Belt Championships is set up as a stroke play-match play combo with the top four teams following 54 holes of stroke play advancing to match play on Thursday. The entire championship will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Troy's 1.37 score vs. par as a team ranks fourth in the league heading into the week, while Brantley Scott's -0.56 mark is fourth individually, and Jake Springer and Nicklas Borrmann are tied for 23rd in the Sun Belt with 0.96 scores vs. par.
"The guys are playing good right now, and we did it against tough competition in the spring," head coach Forrest Schultz said. "We're excited to get rolling and anxious to see the course because it's a new location for all of us. It's a Jack Nicklaus design, so it will be more forgiving off the tee and less forgiving on the approach shots. We've been a good driving team off the tee all year and worked hard on our approach shots the last few weeks."
The Trojans have climbed the national rankings this spring to No. 77 nationally and are on the cusp of an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament thanks to top finishes at events hosted by Auburn and LSU, plus a win at the Golfweek/AGT Intercollegiate.
"We've stressed that we can't get caught up in the idea of what's good enough to make match play," Schultz said. "We're going to play and compete like we're in a regular stroke play tournament, and we need to finish first. There are ranking implications on the stroke play side of the tournament, so we're playing for a lot in the first three days. We feel like with the right head-to-head wins, we can move our number closer to the bubble."
Scott has shot under-par in 12 of his 27 rounds this season, with nine rounds in the 60s, and the Trojans have counted his score on the team card in 26-of-27 rounds. The sophomore carries a school-record 71.82 career stroke average into the Sun Belt Championship.
Borrmann and Springer have 11 rounds under par each and have played well in the spring. Springer has a 71.80 stroke average in Troy's five spring tournaments and Borrmann is close behind at 72.73 for the spring.
Will McFadden and Jason Quinlan round out Schultz's lineup for the week. McFadden is Troy's most experienced golfer on the course, with 135 rounds played in his five-year career. He enters this year's event with a 73.74 average of the year and seven rounds under par, while Quinlan has played 12 rounds, with nine coming in the spring. He's been Troy's second-place finisher in the final two events heading into the SBC Championship.
Troy will be in the first group off No. 10 to open play Monday with the first threesome hitting the links at 8:30 a.m. The Trojans are paired with ULM and Coastal Carolina for the first 18 holes.
