Ten Straight Runs Propel Troy to Comeback Victory Over Texas State
4/21/2023 11:17:00 PM | Baseball
The five-run frame was a part of 10 straight runs the Trojans (27-12, 9-7) used to put themselves in a four-way tie for third place in the Sun Belt standings while moving their RPI to 29.
The fifth inning saw Troy trailing 4-2 as Donovan Whibbs accounted for both runs batted in with a single in the third and a groundout in the fourth. A Shane Lewis hit by pitch got the inning started, but it looked like not much would come of it after a flyout and a single, with Lewis getting thrown out at third.
A walk to Ethan Kavanagh started the two-out rally as Tremayne Cobb Jr., in a full count, singled to center to score Mock and bring Troy within one. Three straight singles followed from Kole Myers, Clay Stearns, and Whibbs to tie the game and put Troy in front 7-4.
Lewis's 17th home run in the bottom of the seventh ended up being the difference. The two-run shot made it 9-4 and ended it being important as Texas State scored four in the top of the ninth.
Lewis is now two home runs away from becoming the all-time leader in home runs at Troy during the Bbcor era. The current record is 18 home runs in a season held by three players, with the last time coming in 2013 by Trae Santos.
Whibbs had the third four-RBI game of his career, finishing with two hits. Stearns scored three runs and recorded an RBI, while Myers had his second career three-hit game as a Trojan finishing with an RBI and two runs scored.
The only blemish of Brady Fuller's (4-3) night came in the first inning when Texas State put up four runs. Fuller shut down the Bobcats' offense after that as he picked up his fourth win of the season. Fuller's final line was five innings pitched, three earned runs on seven hits, two walks, and six strikeouts.
Zach Fruit making his 11th appearance out of the bullpen, kept Texas State at bay until they were able to get to Fruit for four runs in the ninth. Fruit went 3.2 innings, struck out three, and walked one before Ben Thompson came on to get the final out and his second save of the year.
Coming into the night with six wins and one loss was Texas State (25-14, 9-7) starter Levi Wells (6-2). Wells picks up his second loss of the year after Troy got to him in the fifth, where he would be taken out after 4.2 innings allowing six runs on nine hits, four walks, and nine strikeouts.
Ben McClain went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double for the Bobcats. Davis Powell recorded two base knocks while scoring twice. Also finishing with two hits on the evening was August Ramirez as he drove in three runs. Chase Mora plated two runs, and Jose Gonzalez scored twice as well.
Texas State's first four runs in the first inning came on four hits and two errors. The four runs they plated in the ninth came on three hits and two more errors.
Game two of the series is set for 3 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, April 22, from Riddle-Pace Field
