Martinez Serrano, Anton Take Home Sun Belt Men’s Tennis Honors

TROY, Ala. – Troy's Mario Martinez Serrano was named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year and Player to Watch, in addition to joining Carles Anton on the league's All-Sun Belt First Team, the Sun Belt announced Tuesday afternoon.

Martinez led the Sun Belt with 19 wins during his freshman season as he posted a 19-3 record in dual matches, with 18 of the 19 victories coming on court one. Additionally, Martinez went 6-1 in Sun Belt matches and joined Anton as the only two players in the league with winning percentages over .800.

In the fall, he won the Mercer Gridiron Classic and advanced to the round of 32 at the ITA Southern Regional before a three-set loss to the nation's No. 9 player.

The Player to Watch award is presented to the highest vote-getter from the Player of the Year voting that has eligibility remaining for the following year and did not win the award.

Anton's selection marks his second straight to the All-Sun Belt First Team and his third-straight postseason honor after taking home second team honors as a freshman, he was also named the 2021 Freshman of the Year.

He has the most wins of any player on court two in the Sun Belt season with a 15-4 mark on the court and 16-4 record overall (1-0 on court one). Anton finished 5-2 in Sun Belt play and advanced the round of 32 in the ITA Southern Regional in the fall thanks to a victory over Tulane's Luka Petrovic. Additionally, Anton's 16 overall wins are the second-most in the league trailing only Martinez's 19.

Troy opens play in the Sun Belt Tournament on Thursday at 1 p.m. as the No. 4 seed against No. 5 seed Georgia Southern. The Trojans knocked off the Eagles, 4-2, last week on Troy's Senior Day.
