PENSACOLA, Fla. – Poised to make its fourth championship run over the last seven years, the No. 4-seed Troy women's basketball team opens the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in the Pensacola Bay Center on Friday at 2 p.m. against No. 5-seed Old Dominion.
The Trojans (17-12, 12-6 SBC) hope to reenergize their season after losing the last two games of the regular season with the first-ever meeting against the Monarchs (21-11, 12-6 SBC).
Troy earned three All-Sun Belt Team nods at the end of the regular season, with Makayia Hallmon earning second-team honors, while Ja'Mia Hollings and Tai'Sheka Porchia were named to the third team.
Hallon ended the regular season as the seventh-leading scorer in the league at 14.6 points, scoring in double-figures 22 times in 2022-23. Meanwhile, Hollings was a double-double machine, averaging 13.3 points and 9.2 rebounds in league play for 14th and second in the SBC, respectively. Lastly, Porchia is a dual threat for the Trojans behind Hollings, with 12.5 points for 15th in scoring in the SBC. She also can crash the boards at 7.3 rebounds per game.
As a team, the Trojans are an elite team offensively, with five players averaging double figures for a conference-best 84.2 points per game on the fifth-best field goal percentage of 40.4 percent. Despite allowing the most points in league play at 75.8 points, Troy countered it with the third-most blocked shots at 3.4 and being the only team in the SBC to average double-figure steals a game at 11.6.
The Monarchs went 2-2 in the final two weeks of the regular season to grab the fifth seed and play the No. 12-seed Georgia State Panthers in the second round. The game was competitive through the first 20 minutes, with ODU holding a 25-22 lead at halftime before outscoring the Monarchs 20-12 in the third quarter on 4-of-7 shooting from deep. The third quarter and four double-figure scorers helped push ODU to the third round.
ODU has two double-figure scorers on the roster, Amari Young and Makayla Dickens, at 11.5 and 10.5 points, respectively. Young is also the team's leading rebounder at 8.5 rebounds per game.
Troy is 2-0 over the last two seasons in the opening round, advancing to nothing short of a championship game appearance. Since head coach Chanda Rigby took over the Trojans in 2012-23, the Trojans are 6-3 overall in their first round.
