TROY, Ala. — The Troy men's basketball team enters the 2023-24 season with a young frontcourt that looks to bring speed, athleticism and a variety of offensive skills to the equation.
Troy has two returning members of the frontcourt in sophomore forward Jackson Fields, who appeared in all 33 games last season and averaged 12.8 minutes per game, and redshirt freshman Randi Ovalle, who did not see any action in the 2022-23 season.
At the small forward position, freshman Victor Valdes and Myles Rigsby, brother of guard Marcus Rigsby, are each expected to play major roles on this year's team. Valdes, from Monterrey, Mexico, averaged 12.8 points on 52.3 percent shooting and 32.9 percent from 3-point range while playing for Zentro Basket Madrid. Rigsby, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, averaged 24.2 points, four rebounds and three assists per game while in high school.
"Victor and Myles will see a lot of minutes. Myles is one our toughest players and best defenders on our roster. Victor is one of our best passers and play makers that we have," head coach Scott Cross said.
Troy also welcomes power forwards Theo Seng and Thomas Dowd. Seng, a junior college transfer from Eastern Arizona, scored 16.6 points and 8.6 rebounds in 29.1 minutes per game while shooting 51.3 percent from the field. Dowd is a freshman out of Dothan High School and has an impressive shooting game. In high school, Dowd averaged 17 points and 16 rebounds per game, while also shooting 40.3 percent from deep.
"Seng brings some height, length, experience and shooting ability. Dowd is also a knock down three-point shooter that has a high motor," Cross said.
Randarius Jones, a junior, is a tenacious big man out of Monroe, La. He transferred to Troy after playing the 2022-23 season at Los Angeles Southwest Community College where he averaged 13.3 points and 11.1 rebounds per game while starting all 27 contests.
"Randarius Jones brings physicality and toughness to our team. He will be one of our best rebounders," Cross said.
Other newcomers to the front court include junior transfer Jerrell Bellamy and freshman Kerrington Kiel.
The Troy men's basketball opens its 2023-24 season against Fort Lauderdale on Monday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. CT in Trojan Arena. Admission for Monday's contest is free of charge. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+, and live stats will be available on TroyStats.com.
