TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's team picked up a 1-0 victory over Louisiana on Sunday afternoon at the Troy Soccer Complex. Prior to the game Troy celebrated Senior Day and honored 10 seniors.
The win marked the first Sun Belt win of the season for Troy (6-9-2, 1-6-2 SBC).
The lone goal was scored in the 23rd minute off a goal from senior Gabrielle Chartier, her team-high seventh of the year. Riley Rojahn was credited with the assist after serving a beautiful cross into the box which Chartier finished.
The Trojans offense registered 18 shots – six on target – but didn't find the back of the net again. However, it wasn't necessary as the Trojan defense put together its best performance of the season. Louisiana (6-8-2, 3-6 SBC) had 10 total shots, but not a single one was on goal.
Goalkeeper Rubie Kelley picked up her fourth shutout of the season.
Thoughts From Coach
Head coach Stuart Gore gave his thoughts following the victory:
"Every game in this league is a grind. We've seen it time and time again, and today we got ourselves across the finish line.
For most of the seniors, I am their fourth coach in four years. They've been through the wringer. So, to end on a high note for them on this field is fantastic.
[Gabrielle Chartier] finds herself in those goal-scoring positions and that's one of those things you can't really teach. She has just found her knack this season and I am grateful for her, for sure."
Thoughts from Gabrielle Chartier
The senior midfielder from Montreal, Canada gave her thoughts on the victory:
"We struggled a lot scoring this season, so it feels good to have this game. It feels good to be the leading goal-scorer. To end here at home with a win, it's just perfect."
