TROY, Ala. – Lee Poppell and Nick Fowlkes turned in a pair of dominating performances to lead the Troy men's golf team at two different events on Tuesday. On the team side, the Trojans finished second at the Everett Buick GMC Classic, finishing ahead of Michigan, Boston College and Nebraska.
Poppell finished second at the MartinFed Invitational, shooting 12-under, while Fowlkes tied for third in a loaded field at the Everett Buick GMC Classic, shooting 7-under. The MartinFed Invitational was an individual event only for Troy, as no team score was recorded.
Poppell's 12-under 204 is tied for the lowest round by a Trojan golfer since at least the 2005-06 season, as he shot in the 60s all three rounds, including a 4-under 68 in Tuesday's final round. A freshman from Tallahassee, Fla., Poppell carded 19 birdies over his 54 holes, tied for the most in the field, as he dominated the par-4 holes to the tune of 7-under par, the best in the field.
Fowlkes shot under-par in all three rounds with a pair of 70s wrapped around his 3-under 69 in the second round at the Everett Buick GMC Classic. He played steady golf throughout the week with 14 birdies and just seven bogeys over his 54 holes.
Troy shot 11-under on Tuesday to rocket up the leaderboard into second place, passing Little Rock, Michigan, Louisiana and Central Arkansas. All five Trojans shot under-par on the day, with the team dropping a 1-under 71.
Brantley Scott and Jake Springer both eagled the par-5 16th as they turned in rounds of 68 and 69, respectively, to climb into a tie for 38th place overall. Scott led the field with 41 pars.
Gage Carnes matched Fowlkes' 70 on Tuesday as he tied for 13th place at 3-under for the week and was among the tournament leaders in par-5 scoring (-9) and birdies (13), while Pablo Gracia shot 1-under with five birdies in the round, second only to Carnes' seven.
At the MartinFed, Laurenz Kubin tied for 22nd place following a consistent week that saw him shoot 1-over with a pair of even rounds following a 73 to open play. Will Simpson moved up a pair of spots into a tie for 24th after shooting 72 on Tuesday, including an eagle on the par-5 seventh, while George Burch and Greg Jones tied for 49th place – Burch tied for third in the field playing the par 3s to even par.
Troy wraps its fall schedule next week at The Clerico hosted by Oral Roberts.
