TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's soccer team snapped its three-game losing streak on Saturday night at the Troy Soccer Complex as it tied 2-2 with Coastal Carolina.
Troy (5-8-2, 0-5-2 SBC) fell behind early but rallied with two second-half goals to take the lead before Coastal Carolina (3-9-2, 0-5-2 SBC) scored a late equalizer.
The Chanticleers opened the scoring in the 64th minute off a goal from Julia Ziegenfuss, her first of the year, with Tamlyn Parkes getting the assist.
The Trojans quickly answered as Gabrielle Chartier picked up her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 67th minute off a beautiful pass from Carley White. Three minutes later, the Trojans took the lead off a Delaney Wells header on a corner from Danielle Trovato. It was Wells's third goal of the season.
The Trojans continued to dominate over the next 15 minutes, but Coastal Carolina was able to put together some offense late, and in the 88th minute, the Chanticleers leveled the score off a Maggie Mace goal, with the assist going to Rocio Fernandez.
Despite the level score at the end of the game, the Trojans led in nearly every other category. Troy outshot Coastal Carolina 17-7, including 10-5 in the second half. Troy took nine corner kicks compared to one for Coastal Carolina.
Rubie Kelley started in goal and played all 90 minutes for Troy, making two saves on four shots. Vivienne Carr made four saves on six shots for the Chanticleers.
Thoughts from Coach
Head coach Stuart Gore gave his thoughts following the match:
"It feels like a loss to be honest. The only good thing is we went a goal down and we dug in… But to give it up at the end the way we did, that's just where your adrenaline has to go through the roof, and you have to take pride in defending corners, and they had one corner and they scored.
The fact we stopped the losing streak is good. But we're playing against a quality team [next week], that possesses the ball even better than Coastal did tonight. So, we're going to have to be on it for 90 minutes and see what happens."
