Historic Night
Saturday was a historic night for Troy men's basketball as Zay Williams became the 10th player in Division-I program history to score over 1,000 points in a career as the leading scorer (16) in a conference victory over Arkansas State, 66-54.
Troy held the lead for most of the ballgame after Aamer Muhammad hit two critical 3-pointers to retake the momentum at the 13:05 mark, 21-19. The Trojans outscored the Red Wolves 10-4 over the next 4:50 to provide enough cushion heading into the break, 31-27.
After the Red Wolves trimmed the Troy lead back down to six with 1:48 remaining, 59-53, Nelson Phillips received the pass from Williams down the court. The senior rose and slammed it home for a "SportsCenter Top-10" play to seal the victory.
Christian Turner ended the night with a season-high and tied for a career-high with 13 points, while Christyon Eugene scored in double figures (12) for the 11th time in the last 12 games.
A-Town Bound
Georgia State enters Thursday's matchup with hopes of ending a two-game losing streak after falling in both games to the Louisiana teams (ULM – 66-58, Louisiana – 78-70). The Panthers also hope for the return of their head coach, Jonas Hayes, after he missed the second half of the Louisiana game after falling ill.
Four Panthers found their way into double figures despite the loss, with Dwon Odom at the top with 18 points on seven made shots. Both sides shot above 45 percent, forcing the loss in the rebound game to be the separator with the Ragin' Cajuns on top, 36-26.
Since conference play started, the Panthers are elite shot blockers, ranking second in the Sun Belt in blocked shots with 5.25 per game. However, where the team struggles most is the turnover margin. The Panthers averaged 14 turnovers through four games, while their opponent has 10 for an SBC-worst minus-4.0 turnover margin.
Dwon Odom is lights out through the 2022-23 season with 15.2 points per game for eighth in the Sun Belt. Brenden Tucker joins Odom on the SBC top-25, ranking 23rd with 11.7 points. Kalik Brooks looks to be the 3-point specialist, averaging one make per game on a 44.4 shooting percentage – ranked third in the SBC.
