LUBBOCK, Texas – The Troy women's soccer team opens its 2022 campaign with a matchup at the sole power-five opponent on the schedule in Texas Tech and against in-state opponent Alabama A&M.
Troy's battle against the Red Raiders starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the John Walker Soccer Complex, while Alabama A&M's match is at 4 p.m. next Monday, Aug. 22, at Bulldog Field.
Looking at the 2022 Trojans
The Trojans return all five top scorers from the 2021 season with Erin Bloomfield, Ella Owen, Taytum Terrell, Nia Wilson and Lisa Blankestein. As a team, the Trojans retain 91 percent of points, 94 percent of goals and 82 percent of assists from last season.
After finishing last season ranked second in the Sun Belt for goals-against average at 0.90 and third in save percentage at 82.4 percent, Lindsey LaRoche returns as the primary netminder for the Trojans. The 2021 All-Sun Belt Second Team member joins Alisa Detlefsen and Kuya-Strobel as the 2022 team captains.
Freshmen Abria Smith, Halee Bradbury, Nittany Vega, Jordan Schaetzly and Grace Havard joined the Trojan roster this fall as members of the signing class of 2022. The transfer portal was also a success for Troy after acquiring Jayla Gage from Chicago State, Jocelyn Garcia from Georgia and Ashley Rainho from High Point.

First-Time Ever
Thursday's matchup between the Red Raiders and Trojans marks the first-ever meeting between the programs in soccer history. It also marks the first time the Trojans have competed against a Big 12 school.
The Red Raiders enter 2022 searching for more after a solid 11-6-3 season that included a semifinal appearance as the No. 5 seed in the Big 12 Conference Tournament – lost 3-0 against No. 1 TCU. TTU looks to find a new primary scorer after Kirsten Davis graduated on a 14-goal, six assist and 34-point season. The team's head netminder, Madison White, returns to the helm after starting all 20 games for a 72.9 save percentage.
It Feels Like Last Year
Troy leads the series 4-1.
After not playing an official match since 2009, Troy and Alabama A&M meet for the second straight season, with 2021 ending in the Trojans' favor, 3-0. That game saw Bloomfield explode for a hat trick on just three shots.
2021 had the Bulldogs finish strong after opening the season 0-6-1, redeeming themselves for a 10-8-1 record and a visit to the SWAC semifinal round – lost 2-0 against Grambling. Again, Makayla Rushing leads the charge for Alabama A&M after a 10-goal season – seven more than any of her fellow Bulldogs. Overall, the Bulldogs returned their top-four goal scorers for the 2022 season.
