TROY, Ala – Coastal Carolina scored two runs in the first and never looked back as the Chanticleers took game two of the weekend series 7-3 over the Trojans from Riddle-Pace Field, handing Troy their sixth straight loss.
Donovan Whibbs had the only multi-hit game for Troy (29-20, 13-13) as seniors Easton Kirk and Trey Leonard each had solo home runs in the ball game.
Michael Knorr (5-0) kept the Trojan offense mostly at bay and got the Chanticleers (32-16-2, 18-7-1) the win holding them to two runs on four hits. He was followed by Elliot Carney in relief, who went the final three innings striking out five, allowing only a run on two hits.
It was another tough outing for freshman Brady Fuller (4-3) as he gave up six runs on eight hits in four innings of work with only one strikeout to get his third loss of the season.
The Chanticleers didn't waste any time getting on the board as they plated a pair of runs in the first inning after three hits and an error. They added a third in the second, capitalizing on two singles and a stolen base.
Kirk gave Troy their first run of the game after a 360-foot home run over the right-field wall. It was Kirk's eighth home run of the season, giving him the team lead and the most in any season during his Trojan career.
Coastal Carolina responded; however, getting that run back as a wild pitch in the third restored the Chanticleer's three-run advantage making it 4-1.
For the fourth straight inning, the Chanticleers scored to extend the lead as they put a double steal on with runners on the corners to bring in a run, followed by a sacrifice fly making it 6-1.
Senior shortstop Jesse Hall was responsible for the second run of the Trojan's afternoon with his 14th double and 37th run batted in of the season; both lead the team.
Cameron Gray made another appearance out of the bullpen and tossed a solid three innings giving up no runs and only allowing two hits with three strikeouts.
The lead was cut in half during the bottom of the seventh with a home run from Trey Leonard. It was his sixth of the season, but the Trojan scoring ended there.
Up Next: Troy will celebrate Senior Day before the Sunday series finale as Troy looks to salvage a win. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
