Coastal Carolina Comes Back to Beat Troy
5/13/2022 10:23:00 PM | Baseball
Troy (29-19, 13-12) outhit the Chanticleers (30-16-1, 17-7-1) 12-10, but the runs stopped coming in for Troy after the sixth.
Reese Maniscalco (2-1) came on in relief for Coastal Carolina, effectively shutting down the Trojan offense, holding them to one hit over the final three frames while striking out six.
For Troy, Kyle Gamble (2-4) picks up his fourth loss of the season after allowing four runs on four hits. Freshman Keaton Fuller also came on in relief and was roughed up as he allowed three runs in an inning of work.
It looked like starting pitcher Rigsby Mosley was in line for his third win of the season after going 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits with three strikeouts, but the Chanticleer comeback was on late.
Offensively Kyle Mock and Clay Stearns accounted for four of the Trojan's six runs as each finished with two RBIs. Caleb Bartolero had a three-hit night with an RBI, and first baseman William Sullivan brought in a run with a sacrifice fly. All but one Trojan had a hit.
The Trojans saw themselves get on the board first as Stearns laced a 105-mph single through the left side, scoring Brandon Schrepf, who had made it all the way to third after his single, a stolen base, and wild pitch to gain the 1-0 advantage.
A sacrifice fly from Coastal Carolina quickly evened things up again in the top half of the third inning, but a Sullivan double and a Bartolero single gave Troy another one-run lead.
A big fifth inning saw Troy take a 5-1 lead as Mock went the opposite way for his seventh double of the year, scoring both Sullivan and Jesse Hall. Another Chanticleer sacrifice fly got a run back, but Stearns in the bottom of the sixth made a four-run lead again with a single scoring Whibbs.
Coastal Carolina had five doubles tonight; their fourth double started the comeback in the seventh, getting within two runs.
Coastal Carolina would take the lead in the top of the eight as a solo home run tied the ball game, and a balk gave them a 7-6 advantage. A double extended the lead to 8-6, and in the ninth, a three-run home run put the game away as Troy was unable to make a comeback.
Troy now sits in sixth place in the Sun Belt standings and is on a five-game losing streak.
UP Next: The second game of this three-game set will take place tomorrow, Saturday, May 14, with Troy looking to even the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
