Troy Places Nine in the Top Five on Day Two of UAB Green and Gold - Invite and Multi

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -Â After Ines Garcia led Troy into competition yesterday, the Trojans followed it on day two of the UAB Green and Gold - Invite and Multi with nine top-five finishes on Friday in the UAB Track and Field Complex.

The steeplechase proved to be Troy's most successful event, having three athletes placed in the top five. Blake Vaughn came across the line at the 9:47.32 mark, proving enough for silver - quickest lap was his final lap at 1:17.084. With a time of 10:17.08, Sage Delfino rounded out the top five on the men's side for the Trojans. Lauren Locke came across the stripe in second place on the women's side, finishing the race at 11:34.13.

Garcia returned to action on day two, completing her heptathlon events with the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter. The sophomore started sluggishly in the long jump, coming in ninth at 4.81-meters before fouling out in the javelin throw. However, in her final event, Garcia came back to finish the 800-meter in second with a time of 2:28.24. In the end, Garcia finished eighth in the heptathlon standings.

Marek Taskar claimed the bronze medal in the men's javelin throw, having his farthest throw on the third attempt with 60.55-meters.

Troy had a pair of fourth-place finishes in the long jump events with Denzel Harper and Alejandra Gutierrez Fuente. Harper's jumps varied with each attempt, but the Atlanta native saved the best for last, leaping 6.70-meters in the final attempt. Fuente had the opposite process, having her best jump take place on the first attempt, totaling 5.50-meters.

The Trojans' final top-five finish came from Edita Sklenska in the women's 1500-meter. Sklenska was in second after the first lap, completing it in just 56.096 seconds. However, the remaining three laps saw the junior fall back to fourth, finishing at the 4:42.87 mark.

The meet concludes its three-day duration tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the discus event.
