MONROE, La. – Behind a stellar pitching performance and a new career-high 12 strikeouts from Garrett Gainous, Troy cruised to a 7-2 victory over the University of Louisiana Monroe Friday night from Warhawk field.
Gainous (4-2) was in control all night as he only gave up two hits, throwing 101 pitches in a season-high seven innings pitched. ULM's only run came in the third off a solo home run, and Gainous would end his night retiring the last nine batters he faced.
Troy (19-10, 6-4) saw production throughout their lineup as eight Trojans finished with having at least one hit. Clay Stearns and Brandon Schrepf had two RBIs on the evening, and Trey Leonard's double in the eighth inning gives him 13 straight games with a base hit.
ULM starter Cam Barlow (2-3) went 7.1 innings, but six runs on nine hits earned him the loss as the Warhawks fell to 10-17 and 4-5-1 in conference play.
In a one-run deficit during the fifth inning, the Trojan bats came alive to take the lead as Jesse Hall put Troy on the board with an RBI single, and aggressive base running from Stearns forced a throw from left field, but the catcher had dropped the ball to give Troy a 2-1 lead.
That lead held the rest of the game, and Troy added more in the top of the sixth after a Caleb Bartolero walk, who returned to the lineup for the first time in 17 games coming back from injury.
Three straight singles and the second Warhawk error broke open the game to give Troy a 5-1 lead. All three runs came with two outs.
However, the scoring didn't stop there as Leonard laced a double down the left-field line. Then, a Seth Johnson pinch-hit single and an Easton Kirk hit by pitch loaded the bases for Schrepf, who picked up his second RBI of the game with a walk to bring in Leonard from third.
The Warhawks looked to try and get back in the ball game in the bottom of the eighth, picking up their second run of the game with a bases-loaded walk, but the deficit was too steep to overcome, giving Troy the victory snapping their three-game slide.
Keaton Fuller and Grayson Stewart finished what Gainous started combining to go two innings giving up no hits, two walks, and an unearned run, with Stewart earning his second save of the year.
Up Next: Troy will look to make it two in a row over the Warhawks tomorrow, April 9, at 2 p.m. as they continue the series in Monroe.
