Troy, Ala. – Finding themselves down a run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and two runners on, Trey Leonard sent a 1-2 pitch to the right-field gap scoring both runners and giving Troy a 4-3 victory over Georgia State Saturday afternoon from Riddle Pace-Field.
With the victory, not only does Troy (27-14, 12-8) take the series from the Panthers (24-19, 10-10), but the win gives the Trojans their 27th victory of the season, already matching their win total of last season.
Making his first-weekend start of the season, pitcher Rigsby Mosley went 5.1 innings pitched, tied a career-high in strikeouts finishing with eight while allowing three runs on only two hits.
Reliever Kyle Gamble (2-3) earns his second straight victory after going 2.2 innings allowing two hits and no runs. Grayson Stewart came on in the top of the ninth to close things out. After a leadoff single, Stewart got a fly-out and a double play to end the game.
Ryan Watson (1-2) of Georgia State picks up the loss after coming on in relief in the bottom of the seventh with runners on first and second, allowing both to score.
It was a quiet afternoon for both offenses as Easton Kirk and Donovan Whibbs had two hits each, with Kirk picking up an RBI.
The Trojans applied pressure early as the bases were loaded for Caleb Bartolero and were able to scratch across the first run of the ball game after reaching on a fielder's choice scoring Jesse Hall.
The Troy lead lasted up until the fourth inning as the Panthers had runners on second and first, putting them in motion as a slow ground ball to shortstop gave Hall only one play at first, scoring the tying run.
Georgia State made Mosley work in the sixth inning as a walk, and a single brought Gamble on. After a groundout to advance the runners into scoring position, Max Ryerson singled through the left side scoring both runners and giving Georgia State their first lead.
In what looked to be a quick seventh inning after the first two Trojans were retired, a six-pitch walk to Kirk kept the inning alive, and a single by Bartolero brought up Leonard.
Leonard's fifth double of the season gave Troy a 4-3 advantage, and that's where things would finish. His double gives Troy 79 on the year.
Up Next: Brady Fuller will toe the mound in the series finale between these two teams tomorrow, Sunday, May 1, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
