TROY, Ala. – After a two-hour and thirteen-minute delay due to thunder and lightning, Caleb Bartolero's two-out, two-run single gave Troy a 3-2 victory over Georgia State Sunday afternoon from Riddle-Pace Field.
The victory gives the Trojans (28-14, 13-8) their fourth straight win and 28th on the season, already surpassing last season's win total.
The eighth inning began with a Jesse Hall walk, but a strikeout and a flyout had given Georgia State two quick outs. Easton Kirk worked a seven-pitch walk to keep the inning alive and put two runners on.
A passed ball made its way to the backstop, allowing Hall and Kirk to advance a base and move the go-ahead run 90 feet away.
In a 1-1 count Bartolero ripped a single to left field, allowing both runners to score, giving him 16 RBIs on the season and Troy the lead.
Both runners' scoring proved crucial as the Panthers would get a run back in the top of the ninth with a home run but nothing else.
Brandon Schrepf (1-0), who has played 24 games this season, starting 19 of them in the outfield, earns his first win as a Trojan after coming in to pitch in the seventh inning with one out. With runners at first and third, Schrepf got a ground ball that was turned for a 4-6-3 double play to get out of the jam.
Schrepf went 2.2 innings allowing only one run on one hit while striking out the side in the eighth to finish with five.
Six different Trojans had a hit in the ball game as Brady Fuller, who started on the mound, went 5.2 innings, striking out eight, only allowing a single run.
For Georgia State (24-20, 10-11), reliever Camren Landry (2-4) is given the loss as he worked three innings, allowing both his walks to score off one hit.
The third inning saw Georgia State take a 1-0 lead in part to some timely two-out hitting. Fuller got two quick outs on three pitches but followed with a four-pitch walk, allowing back-to-back singles to score the afternoon's first run.
The Trojans struck in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1 after Donovan Whibbs ripped a double to straightaway center field and made his way to third when the center fielder misplayed the ball. One batter later, Cameron Gray brought him home with a single for. His 12th RBI of the season.
The sweep means that the Trojans separate themselves in the standings as they now sit alone in fifth place, three games ahead of sixth place.
Up Next: Trojans travel north to take on the Samford Bulldogs in Birmingham for a mid-week contest on Tuesday, May 3, beginning at 6 p.m.
