SAN MARCOS, Texas – Troy Softball stumbled in the opening game of the series against Texas State, 5-1, Friday night at Bobcat Stadium.
Despite the loss, Kelly Horne became one walk closer to breaking the program's single-season walks record. After drawing a walk tonight, Horne is now just three walks away from setting the record.
Texas State (30-17, 14-8 Sun Belt) struck first in the bottom of the opening frame when a pair of slap singles from Hannah Earls and Anna Jones plated the first run of the contest.
Audra Thompson looked to spark momentum in the top of the second with a two-out single to left but was called for leaving early on the next pitch.
Leanna Johnson (18-9) worked around two hits over the third and fourth to hold the Bobcats scoreless. However, a trio of walks and a double in the home half of the fifth plated three runs for Texas State.
After a sacrifice fly saw Texas State take a 5-0 advantage, Troy (27-16, 13-9 Sun Belt) saw a pair of runners reach off back-to-back walks in the top of the final frame.
Taylor McKinney ripped a one-out single to center field to plate the Trojans' lone run of the contest.
Thompson then reached on a two-out error but Troy's rally fell short after a pop up to the catcher.
Jessica Mullins (21-22) earned the win after throwing the first six innings and re-entering in the top of the seventh following the two walks. The sophomore scattered two hits and fanned nine batters en route to her 21st win of the season.
Johnson suffered the loss after allowing four runs, five hits and four walks.
