Trojans Use Six-Run Ninth to Beat Georgia Tech

In a 6-6 game in the top of the ninth, William Sullivan began the Trojan (25-14, 10-8) outburst with a single, followed by Easton Kirk getting hit by a pitch to put pressure on the Yellow Jackets (25-17). Caleb Bartolero stepped up to the plate and brought in the go-ahead run with his second hit of the night.
With two outs, the Trojans continued to deal damage as Donovan Whibbs continued to swing a hot bat connecting with a bases-loaded single to bring in two more runs. What seemed to be an inning-ending pop-up from Hudson Hartsfield turned into two more Troy runs when the Georgia Tech shortstop dropped the ball.
The inning was capped off when Jesse Hall took the first pitch he saw and ripped a double to left field, bringing in his team-leading 32nd RBI.
Before the ninth, Sullivan had a big night, becoming the sixth Trojan this season to record four runs batted in. First, his single tied the game in the third, and his two-run home run in the fourth was his fifth season, which gave Troy the lead.
Trojan starter Bay Witcher, who celebrated his 23rd birthday, went a season-high 6.1 innings pitched, allowing four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Witcher left the game with a 6-3 lead, but Kyle Gamble came on after a walk, and an error put two men on in relief.
A three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Yellow Jackets to tie the game 6-6. Gamble (1-3) picks up his first win of the season after Troy's big ninth inning.
After getting two quick outs in the bottom of the first, back-to-back doubles off Witcher, allowed the Yellow Jackets to take the early 1-0 lead.
That lead lasted only one batter as Bartolero took a first-pitch fastball and sent it over the left-field fence 340 feet off the Georgia Tech football facility building to tie the game.
The Yellow Jackets once again took the lead in the bottom of the second as a double off the top of the wall that just evaded the outstretched arm of Trey Leonard brought in the second run, followed by a sacrifice fly to give Georgia Tech a two-run lead after two.
The Trojans remained unphased by the deficit as a leadoff walk and a single to start the third inning followed by a passed ball put runners quickly in scoring position. Sullivan took advantage immediately with a single up the middle, scoring Hartsfield and Hall to tie the game again.
Sullivan gave Troy their first lead of the evening after scoring from a Trey Leonard single. The ball thrown home seemed to beat Sullivan to the plate, but a collision with the catcher jarred the ball loose, allowing the Trojans to lead 4-3.
The big night continued for Sullivan as his two-run home run in the top of the fourth gave Troy a 6-3 advantage and five unanswered runs.
Georgia Tech was able to scratch off two runs in the bottom of the ninth with a home run, but the six-run deficit was too large to overcome.
The win gives Troy their second straight year with a victory over a school from the ACC, and the Trojans move to 3-0 all-time against Georgia Tech.
Up Next: Troy will return home and take on another team from Atlanta as they welcome Georgia State to Riddle-Pace Field for a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 29, at 6 p.m.
