TROY, Ala. – Kelly Horne shattered Troy's career walks record, and Leanna Johnson tossed her second no-hitter this season to power Troy past UT Arlington, 5-0, Sunday at the Troy Softball Complex.
With the win, Troy (27-15, 13-8 Sun Belt) clinched the series over UT Arlington (21-20,11-10 Sun Belt).
Horne led off the opening frame of action with her 101st career walk, taking solo claim of Troy's career walks record. The junior would tack on another walk in the contest, bringing her into a tie for second in Troy's single-season walks record (42).
Leanna Johnson (18-8) fanned 11 Mavericks and scattered four walks to toss her second no-hitter of the season and third of her career. The Brantley, Ala., native became the first Trojan to throw two no-hitters in a season since Ashlyn Williams in 2012.
The Trojans rallied for four runs in the home half of the second inning to take the lead once and for all.
Back-to-back singles off the bats of Logan Calhoun and Horne plated the first run of the ball game. A fielding error by the Mavericks' pitcher and a throwing error plated the next two runs for the good guys.
Taylor McKinney capped off the four-run affair with an infield single to plate the final score of the inning.
Johnson allowed just one walk through the next four innings to hold UTA scoreless. The Trojan ace recorded at least one strikeout in every frame except the seventh.
Jade Sinness tacked on an insurance run for the Trojans in the bottom of the sixth after ripping a double in the right-center gap to plate Horne, who reached on a walk.
After a two-out walk put a runner on for the Mavericks in the top of the seventh, Kennedi Gaton made a diving catch in foul territory to solidify Johnson's no-hitter and the series win.
Morgan Max (3-1) was tabbed with the loss after giving up four runs off three hits and committing the two costly errors.
Quotable – Co-Interim Head Coach Taylor Smartt
"I think we played a really sound game offensively, defensively, and in the circle. I am so proud of Leanna for her second no-hitter of the season. She always gives our team a chance when she is in the circle. Kelly Horne notching the program's career walks record shows how disciplined she is at the plate, and it is paying off for her. Top to bottom, today was a really good team win to clinch the series."
