Gainous guides Troy to a 2-1 Victory Over Indiana

TROY, Ala. – A dominant performance from Garrett Gainous and a two-run sixth inning was all that Troy needed to beat Indiana 2-1 Friday afternoon from Riddle Pace Field.
"Garrett's stuff was lights out tonight," head coach Skylar Meade said. "He really ramped it up when he needed to and competed when called upon. Our bullpen played tough, and they competed at the highest level, and I'm really proud of how they stayed the course and finished the game strong."
In his fourth appearance of the season, Gainous (2-1) picked up his second win after going 6.0 innings pitched, allowing two hits, no runs, and two walks while striking out nine Hoosier batters.
Back-to-back walks from Rigsby Mosley and Seth Johnson to start the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be crucial as both scored the only two runs of the game for the Trojans (9-5).
The Trojans handed Indiana (6-7) pitcher Jack Perkins (2-1) his first loss of the year after giving up two runs on four hits. He would strike out six and walk two.
A weak ground ball from Cameron Gray advanced both Mosley and Johnson to second and third and was followed by a Clay Stearns ground ball to second base, allowing Mosley to score quickly with his speed for the Trojan's first run of the ball game.
After being down two strikes, Trojan third baseman Easton Kirk ripped a double off the right-field wall to bring in Johnson for Troy's second run, which proved to be the winner.
It was another strong performance from the Trojan bullpen as Grayson Stewart, Kyle Gamble, and Marquez Oates all came in and saw one inning of work shutting down the Hoosier hitters.
Stewart, Gamble, and Oates all saw one inning of work, all striking out two batters. Indiana had their chances as they were able to load the bases in the seventh, but Stewart got the strikeout to end the threat.
At the end of the game, Indiana made it interesting as they broke up the Trojan shutout after a Josh Pyne single scored the lone Hoosier run. However, Oates wouldn't allow any further damage as he struck out Carter Mathison to end the game and pick up his Sun Belt leading fourth save of the season.
Up Next: The Trojans and Hoosiers will continue their series on Sunday, March 13, with a doubleheader with the first game set for 11 am and the second game immediately following.
