COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Troy Softball team used a four-run eighth inning to down the reigning MAC conference champions Miami (OH), 5-1, Friday in the opening day of the Carolina Classic.
Leanna Johnson (6-1) earned her sixth win of the season after tossing a one-hitter to power past Miami (OH) (2-4), who is fresh off an NCAA Regional appearance.
After both teams plated a run in the top of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings, the Trojan offense ignited for four runs in the top of the eighth to secure the victory.
Logan Calhoun led off the final frame with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Jade Sinness stepped up looking to lay down the sacrifice bunt, but another Redhawk throwing error scored Calhoun and put Sinness on third.
With two outs and runner on first and third following a walk, Taylor McKinney blasted a three-run home run to put the Trojans up 5-1.
Johnson returned to the circle in the bottom of the frame and worked around a leadoff walk to solidify the win.
Troy struck first, when Libby Baker smashed the first hit of the contest in the top of the seventh, a solo home run over the left-field wall.
Miami (OH) earned its first hit in the bottom of the seventh with a single to left field after Allie Cummins reached on an error. A sacrifice bunt put a pair of runners in scoring position for the Redhawks, allowing Karlee Juarez to tie the game on a sacrifice fly.
Vierstra suffered the loss for Miami (OH) in the eight-inning affair after allowing five runs off six hits and a walk.
Quotable – Co-Interim Head Coach Taylor Smartt
"That was a solid win for us, Miami (OH) is a good team. I'm proud of the fight and finish our team displayed. Leanna threw an amazing game and kept us in the ball game. Our hitters made adjustments, and we executed late in the game to score runs."
